Some of the greatest art in the world is in the Vatican, so when "Michelangelo - A Different View" got sanctioned by The Vatican you know it is special. The exhibit gives visitors an opportunity many people will never have in a lifetime, namely to view famous frescos by Florentine master sculptor/painter, Michelangelo, that adorn the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
In 1508 when Michelangelo, just 33 year old, received a commission from Pope Julius II. Michelangelo spent the next four years of his life on his back on scaffolding painting the vaulted ceiling of the Sistine Chapel painting Genesis, a history of creation, and over 300 characters from the Bible.
Visitors to the Sistine Chapel have just a few minutes to view the masterpieces at a height of almost 70 feet overhead. Viewers of the exhibit can see them up close and from the viewpoint Michelangelo saw them.
There are over 50 pieces, of Michelangelo's work including his most famous painting of The Last Judgment, which covers the entire altar wall of the Sistine Chapel, and The Creation of Adam, a depiction of God granting life to the first man.
In addition to Michelangelo's paintings, the exhibit contains frescos from the life of Jesus and Moses painted by Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Pietro Perugino, and Cosimo Rosselli that give a historical background. Michelangelo would have seen these works already in the Vatican before he began his work.
Vatican Museums licensed reproduction of the images which were transferred to special fabric with a technique that allows for a reproduction that is displays the broad spectrum of colors and maintains wonderful color depth and consistency.
"Michelangelo - A Different View" is currently in Albany, NY until Monday, August 23 at the Albany Capital Center.
The exhibition is next moving to Baton Rouge, LA. There it will be at the Raising Cane's River Center located on the Mississippi waterfront. The center is a work of art itself. I particular love the stairs leading up from the riverfront to the center.
McAllen, TX is the next stop. Since McAllen is a very art loving city. it should be well received there.
